Living in Rome under German occupation in 1944, twelve year-old Paulo becomes infatuated with the little girl who lives upstairs, daughter of a fascist boss. Although his older brother has jointed a fascist unit, Paulo himself feels instinctively drawn to the anit-fascist resistance, personified by the mysterious stranger who moves into the building. Paulo's loyalties become divided as he has to make ethical and political choices.
